On March 12th, 2026, QB Kyler Murray signed a one year, $1.3 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings.
Formerly playing for the Cardinals, he was drafted in 2019 and played seven years in Arizona. In his NFL career, he has thrown for 20,460 yards with a 67.1% completion percentage.
Upbringing
Kyler Murray was born in Bedford, Texas, to former Texas A&M quarterback Kevin Murray. Eventually, the Murray family moved to Allen, Texas, where Kyler would go on to play football. In his time at Allen High School, he was the Gatorade Football Player of the Year, was named Mr. Texas Football twice, and his team won 43 games in a row.
Kyler walked into the doors of Texas A&M as a five-star recruit, following in the footsteps of his father. Not only did Kyler play football as an Aggie, but he also played baseball as well. In fact, he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics ninth overall in the 2018 MLB Draft.
Initially, Kyler was not granted the role of starting quarterback at Texas, but he earned his way through a show stopping performance in a game against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
After his first season as an Aggie, he transferred to the University of Oklahoma. In 2018, Murray was chosen as the starting quarterback, where he helped lead the Sooners to a Big 12 Championship victory. At the end of the 2018 season, Kyler received the Heisman Trophy for his talents on the field.
Time in the NFL
In 2019, Murray declared that he would enter the NFL draft. The 5 foot 10 inch quarterback was selected first in the draft by the Arizona Cardinals.
In his debut, Murray threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns. His solid performance established him as a promising player. At the end of his rookie season, he led the team to a 5-10-1 record.
In 2021, things began to look up for the former Sooner. Murray led the team to a 11-6 finish, yet ended up losing to the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card. In addition to his 2020 appearance, Murray made the Pro Bowl for his 3,787 yard season.
In week 14 of the 2022 season, Murray suffered an ACL tear, which placed him on IR for the rest of the season. In his return back to football in the 2023 season, the Cardinals ended with a 4-13 record; however, Murray’s midseason return turned the team around and was the headpiece of the ninth ranked offense at the time.
In 2025, Murray suffered a foot injury in week 5 which placed him on IR for the rest of the season.
On March 11th, 2026, the Cardinals officially released their veteran quarterback, which led him to sign with the Minnesota Vikings. Murray includes the fact that he has been a Vikings fan for a notable portion of his life, “Genuine, genuine fandom that ran deep. Vikings gear, through and through, a lot of Purple in my household.”
